In 1959-1960, I was in 1st grade at University Park Elementary school. Every parent belonged and attended PTA meetings. Around that time, American's feared that Russia had missles in Cuba aimed at the American schools. At one of the PTA meetings, it was planned to protect the children, the parents would drive all the children up to the mountains where we would be safe. One day, we were hurried out the front doors. There were cars parked in line blocks long. They put as many children as they could in each car. No seat belts or strangers to worry about. I can only remember the cars and chaos. It wasn't until 25 years later that I found out what happened that day and that we only went around the block.
